A Much Needed Curtain

A Much Needed Curtain

It looks like Dan and I will be in this lovely apartment for quite a while. It is high time I fixed my biggest annoyance with this place: little shards of light that peak through the vertical blinds in our bedroom window.

I like to sleep in COMPLETE darkness. It bothers me every. single. night. that it is so bright in our bedroom.

Dan doesn’t notice. He’s out as soon as his head hits the pillow. I, on the other hand, lay there looking at the outline of the blinds on the wall…watching the parking lot lights turn on…and off…on….and off….

Why haven’t I gotten on this sooner????

Here is the said awful window…

and here is my solution!

I picked a thick decorator fabric and attached black-out shade material behind it.

It’s not pretty. It’s functional.

The only reason I picked decorator fabric is because of the width of the fabric. Regular cotton doesn’t come wide enough…or I didn’t search long enough. Who has time to look for these things? I decided on Friday I wanted a curtain (since we’ll be in this apartment for probably two more years.). Saturday afternoon I went to Field’s Fabric. I buy the fabric. I did not pass go, I did not collect $200, I did not check any other stores. I try to make the shade that day, but the sewing machine demons messed up my tension.

I let it sit for a week.

I was so disgusted with it. I never wanted to pick it up again.

A week later, I felt guilty about the sewing machine’s constant presence on our dining room table and the yards of fabric draped over the couch. Why wouldn’t they just sew themselves together so I can hang them over my window? The nerve.

I put on my big girl pants and went to the source of all knowledge.

Google.

Google never lets me down.

Google showed me how to fix the tension on my machine, and within 15 minutes, my curtain was good to go! I love you Google.

I’m going to go get the best night sleep I’ve ever gotten.

Goodnight!

  1. Oh, I am so with you there! Complete darkness is the way to go.

Great fix. I am going to be in this house for 2 more years. I should probably get on that curtain thing.

  2. Good job, Emily! I agree – that street light outside our window is very annoying.
